Preparation and learning
Put together a useful first aid kit
A practical starting list, where to keep it and what to check after use.
Keep a clearly marked kit where adults can reach it quickly. Choose supplies for the people, activities and location it serves. Check seals and expiry dates, and replace used items promptly.
Start with these supplies
- Disposable gloves and a resuscitation face shield.
- Sterile dressing pads, non-stick dressings, adhesive strips and gauze.
- Roller and triangular bandages, tape and scissors.
- Sterile saline, a cold pack and an emergency blanket.
- First-aid instructions, emergency contacts, a pen and a notepad.
Adapt it to the setting
A kit for a family walk has different needs from one for a workshop. Ask a pharmacist or first-aid trainer about additions for children, sport, travel or known medical conditions.
Workplace kits need a risk assessment covering hazards, worker numbers and access to help. Use your jurisdiction’s guidance; this starting list does not establish workplace compliance.
Keep it ready
- Store it dry and protected, and tell others where it is.
- Replace supplies after use. Check expiry dates and intact sterile packaging.
- Secure a vehicle kit so it cannot move around.
- Learn how to use unfamiliar items before an emergency.
