Severe bleeding
How to control heavy bleeding while waiting for emergency help.

The short answer
Call 000, apply firm direct pressure with a dressing or clean cloth, and keep pressure on until help arrives.

What to do first
- Call 000 for heavy, spurting or uncontrolled bleeding.
- Apply firm, direct pressure over the wound.
- Add more dressings on top if blood soaks through; do not remove the first one.
- Keep the person still and warm while waiting.
- If the bleeding is from a limb and a tourniquet is available and you are trained, follow emergency instructions.

What to avoid
- Do not remove embedded objects.
- Do not repeatedly lift the dressing to check the wound.
- Do not wash a life-threatening bleed before controlling it.

- Heavy, spurting, persistent or uncontrolled bleeding requires 000.

What to monitor
- Check the dressing and the person’s response without releasing pressure unnecessarily.
Use the same direct-pressure principles for children, using an appropriate-sized dressing.
