Preparation and learning
How often should you refresh CPR training?
The Australian workplace recommendation, what to check for your role and how to practise between courses.
Safe Work Australia’s model first aid code recommends CPR refresher training every year and renewing first aid qualifications every three years. Check the requirements for your workplace, industry and jurisdiction.
Start with the requirement for your role
The model code provides a national reference; the requirements applying to you depend on your jurisdiction and work. Ask your employer or training provider which qualification and renewal interval your role needs.
Education and care services have additional approved-qualification requirements. ACECQA explains these, including current CPR training. A general refresher page cannot confirm whether a particular certificate meets your role’s requirements.
What to check before booking
- The exact course or unit your employer requires.
- Whether the provider is a registered training organisation and issues the statement of attainment you need.
- The practical assessment, course format and any access needs.
- Your previous completion date, so training can be arranged before the next renewal is due.
Practise between courses
Use a short scenario to rehearse recognition, calling 000 and finding an AED. At work, locate the kit, learn how to contact the first aider and check how an ambulance would reach your area.
Online activities on this site help with recall. They do not assess compression depth, rescue breaths or practical competence, and they do not issue a qualification.
If an emergency happens before your refresher
Call 000 and follow the call-taker. If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, start CPR. Do not wait for someone with a newer certificate to arrive.
